Accelerated tooth movement evidence

  • El Angbawi 2015 & Cochrane RV by Fleming 2015 low quality evidence of acceleration of tooth movement

How do teeth move quicker with the Regional Accelerated Phynomenon RAP

  • Tissue remodelling
  • Reduced dentistry of bone
  • = increased bone turnover = increased tooth movement

Healing following Injury

  • Granulation 7 days
  • Callus modelling, remodel, 1-4 months, less time in soft tissues
  • = 4 months to apply biomechanics, as density return to normal

Amount of injury = proportional to the amount of RAP effect

Experiment: Reduced bone dentistry in the direction of tooth movement  increased tooth movement, finite analysis corticotomized bone Vs control

Results

  • Corticotomy = Greater tooth movement
    • M/F ratio lower for tooth movement
    • Tooth movement lasts longer

Conclusion

  • Corticomy should be in the direction of the tooth movement

  • Thanks Farooq, great summary!

Could you clarify this point in Carlalberta’s abstract for the IOC 2020:

A Finite Element analysis of tooth movement after corticotomy revealed that translation in corticotomized teeth occurs at a larger M/F ratio compared to normal bone turnover. In order to achieve this, a bigger moment needs to be inserted into the wire.
