This year the podcast and blog has continued with the help and support of our 4 contributors, Shanya Kapoor and AbdAllah Sharafeldin with the podcast and Kerolos AlHakeem and James Andrews for the blog.
Episodes
We have produced 21 episodes this year, with 16 podcasts and 5 blogs. The podcast topics have varied, from summaries of aligner mechanics and bullying related to malocclusions, to clinical advances with bone plates and 3D printing. Interviews have taken a different format, with topic discussions; Lightforce (3D printed brackets) with Alfred Griffin, TMD with Roxana Petru, and airways and orthodontics with Sanjivan Kandasamy
Blogs
The blogs have been a deep dive into orthognathic surgery and gummy smiles, thanks to Kerolos Al Hakeem and James Andrews for contributing, as well as guests contributors Adith Venugopal and Khurrum Hussein
Highlights
I had the pleasure of hosting Carlos Flores-Mir at this year’s British Orthodontic Conference, where we had a lively discussion of Sleep Disorder Breathing and the conflicting ideas and research around the topic, he has prolifically published on the topic but what I am most inspired by is his willingness to discuss both sides of the controversial topic. Earlier this year I became a subeditor for the Journal of Orthodontics, which was a real honour and responsibility from the editor-in-chief Jayne Harrison. I was invited to deliver my IPR course by the Saudi Orthodontic Society, as well as lectures on IPR at the University of Gothenburg (thank you Julia Normouva), University of Otago, Dentistry Show, it is great to see the interest in this aspect of orthodontics and sharing my learning.
Publications
This year we have published on the topic of Gummy Smiles, a comprehensive review of the topic led by first author Adith Venugopal in Seminars in Orthodontics.
Courses
This year I have delivered more courses than before, with impostor syndrome striking at several points.
Evidence Based Practice x 2. a 2 day course, part of the MSc with the University of Digital Technologies in Medicine and Dentistry DTMD, it was great to take core topics within orthodontics; fixed appliances, expansion, extractions, TMD and retention, and apply scientific appraisal to available evidence to the delegates, thank you Martin Baxmann for the invitation.
Aligner course x 3. Teaching trainees / residents on aligners was thrust upon me when I started as a consultant in 2018 (not due to my ability, but due to no one else wanted to do it!), and this year lecturing to the trainees in Australia and New Zealand, as well as hands-on courses with align technology in the UK have been great, especially to be able to contribute in a meaningful way to the curriculum and cement the foundations of aligners into speciality training programmes.
Simply Ortho. I co-hosted the Simply Ortho day online, a great meeting with colleagues with over 300 attendees.
IPR course x 5
The IPR course held in the UK has been popular in its second year, with clinicians and trainees alike. We also started some evening workshops with TOC dental which were great additions to IPR learning.
Life outside of work (there is one!)
This year I have learned to play paddle (if you could see me play you would think I am very much still in the process of ‘learning’), and travelled less than previous years, although it was not intended It did allow more time at home with the family and spending time with my parents, which has helped take the pace and focus away from work (much needed at times)
